You are busy. Life is busy. Everyone is busy. In fact, you are too busy to not be disciplined. Think about the necessity of discipline in your everyday life. You are disciplined to go to bed at a certain time, to get up at a certain time, to shower, go to work, tend to your children, prepare meals, pay your bills, etc… Discipline is a necessary part of life and the more busy you are, the more important is your regiment of discipline.
In your spiritual life, discipline is an absolute necessity if you expect to grow in godliness. Don Whitney reminds us that “laziness never leads to godliness.” You are busy, I know, but you are not too busy to engage in spiritual disciplines. Whitney is helpful in reminding us that godly people are busy.
the Godly person is devoted to God and to people, and that leads to a full life. Spiritual disciplines have always been what can make a Godly person out of busy person. Spiritual Disciplines aren’t intended only for Christians who have a lot of spare time on their hands (where are the?). They are the God-given means by which busy believers become like Christ.
As your life moves toward complexity, the regular practice of spiritual disciplines are necessary to ensure that you stay grounded in Christ-likeness. Without discipline, your spiritual engagements will revolve around convenience and accident. Those who are not intentional in their efforts to grow in godliness will only get spiritual and biblical knowledge by accident. Don’t be an accidental Christian. There are no shortcuts to godliness, but godliness is of great value. How are you practicing spiritual disciplines in your life?
