It is the time of year when I finalize sermon planning for the upcoming year. If you are a pastor, I encourage you to do the same. There is great benefit to be found in laying out your sermons for the upcoming year, or at least the next three to six months. For instance, at Malvern Hill, January is set aside for some guest preachers and a sermon I am particularly excited about on anxiety. We will begin in the Sermon on the Mount in February. We will study the Palm Sunday and Easter narratives during that season. After Easter, we will spend several weeks in a sermon series on sabbath, the home, and family.
If you are a pastor or a leader in your church, I’ve attached a sermon calendar template you can use to plan out your preaching calendar.
I have also included a Sermon Planning Worksheet you can use in preparing your sermons. Whether you are a full time pastor, an occasional preacher, or you have to prepare a devotion for your school FCA, the sermon planning worksheet is a great way to get your ideas together in one place and to wrestle through the beginning stages of a sermon or devotion.
As you look toward 2024, I hope these tools can help you to be more prepared.
