Daily Docket 1/5/16

The 8-Point Social-Media Apostasy of Alan Jacobs–Alan Jacobs—Distinguished Professor of the Humanities in the Honors Program at Baylor University and a writer on culture and technology (among many other things)—recently detailed his plans to scale back his use of technology (unfollowing everyone on Twitter, dropping Tumblr and Instagram, writing by hand, listening to music on CDs rather than iTunes, and using a dumb phone instead of a smart phone).

Parenting in the Age of Awfulness— As parents we need to constantly assess and reassess our parenting strategies and goals. This article shows how important respect is from a medical and social perspective (I have been ruminating on this article for a while and may write more about it later).

10 Resolutions for Christian Parents— Still on the subject of parenting. Resolve to ask for advice and help more often. There is great wisdom found in an abundance of counselors. Don’t see advice or help as weak. In contrary, there is great strength there. Ask for help when you need it. Confess your weaknesses and failures, both to God and to one another.

9 Strategies that Have Helped Me Pray— Trust me, Chuck Lawless is someone to whom most of us can look for help in having a stronger prayer life. He practices what he preaches.

The Reading Habits of J.I. Packer— You may enjoy this whole article, but my favorite phrase is Packer’s concise definition of Christian belief: “God saves sinners.”
