The Supreme Court of the United States recently refused to take action against a Texas abortion law that effectively bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. The Supreme Court’s inaction allows the Texas law to go into effect and guts Roe v. Wade. This is a victory of incredible proportion for the Pro-Life cause in the United States.
Abortion is among the greatest–if not the greatest–evil ever sanctioned in the United States.
In recent election cycles, there has been an effort, even among some who claim to be evangelical Christians, to shift focus away from the abortion issue in American culture. Politics is complex, it is argued, and choosing to allow one issue to dominate your vote is somehow morally illegitimate.
Mark me down as one of those people who agrees that politics is complicated and who grows increasingly frustrated with lawmakers’ seeming unwillingness to act to end abortion. I agree that there are other issues that matter when voting. There is the question of national security, the economy, justice, necessary infrastructure, and the promotion of the general welfare of our society, for instance.
However, when it comes to abortion, it is not a single issue. Abortion is murder. Abortion is unjust. Abortion does not promote the general welfare of our society.
When we stand against abortion, we stand for the unborn, we stand against injustice, and we promote the general welfare of our society.
Politics is increasingly vile and caustic, but is anything more vile and caustic than demanding the death of the unborn–demanding the right to kill those who have no voice for themselves? Demanding the right to kill those who might be an inconvenience?
There are still legal battles to be fought in Texas and across the country over Roe v. Wade, but for today, we should rejoice that unborn lives find a bit more protection in Texas. For today, the babies of Texas are safer than they were last week. For today, the children of Texas have greater access to justice than at other states across our fine nation. For today, the Supreme Court of the United States has chosen to protect the lives of the unborn rather than to promote the murder of those children.
Are we one-issue voters? Are we one-issue citizens? I hope not, but I think Voddie Baucham’s words are helpful
Even if abortion were an example of single -issue voting, I reject the idea that murdering the unborn can be subjugated in favor of social issues that are being promoted through the lens of Critical Social Justice. In other words, if I were going to be a single-issue voter, that single issue would be the murder of the unborn.
Voddie Baucham, Fault Lines
Hopefully, prayerfully, your political decisions are based on a whole host of issues. Hopefully you vote and participate in the public sphere to promote justice, , safety for others, good laws, and the general well-being of society. But, when all is said and done, no issue matters more than the protection of life, and no life is at greater risk in America today than an unwanted child growing inside her mother.
